Surrender & Shelter Intake

We understand that life can change in unexpected ways, and sometimes keeping a pet is no longer possible. Our goal at HOMEWARD BOUND Large Breed Rescue is to support both families and dogs through this difficult decision with compassion, respect, and integrity.

Before you make the decision to surrender, we are happy to help explore resources that may allow you to keep your dog — such as training options, behavior support, or connections to low-cost veterinary care.
If surrendering is ultimately the best choice, please review the information below.

Owner Surrender

We accept large breed dogs from owners, shelters, and other rescues whenever space and foster availability allow.

Please note:
We are currently accepting surrender applications, but due to limited foster openings, intake may take additional time. We appreciate your patience and understanding.

Surrender Form

Submitting a surrender form does not guarantee acceptance into our program. Once received, our team will review the information and determine if we have an appropriate foster home available.

Intake Criteria

To ensure safety for our foster families, volunteers, and current dogs in care:

  • We cannot accept dogs who are medically fragile beyond reasonable treatment.

  • Dogs with a history of aggression are considered case-by-case, based on severity, triggers, and management needs.

  • Please complete the questionnaire with as much detail as possible. Many foster homes have children, other dogs, or pets, and accurate information helps us place your dog safely.

After reviewing your form, we will contact you regarding next steps, availability, or placement on our waiting list if needed.

Shelter & Rescue Transfers

If you are with a shelter, animal control facility, or rescue and need assistance placing a large breed dog, we are committed to helping when foster space and resources allow.

Please email us:
📧 shelters@hblbrescue.org

We will respond promptly to gather any additional information needed.

Stray Dogs

If you have found a stray large breed dog, please follow your county’s stray hold requirements and notify your local animal control agency first. Once the mandatory hold is completed, we may be able to assist with intake depending on available space.

A Final Note

We are a large-breed–focused rescue, and all intakes are dependent on foster availability and funding at the time of request.
We know surrendering a pet is never easy. Thank you for trusting us to help guide you through the process.

Because every large breed dog deserves safety, compassion, and a chance to find their way home.
